Acclaimed Indian Directors and TV stars were in Houston last night for the 2nd Annual Indian Film Festival of Houston. Guests at the award ceremony held at the Royal Oaks Country Club donned their best Indian Chic attire, and were entertained by the eclectic sounds of Moodafaruka. Director Vikramaditya Motwane won Best Feature for UDAAN, and director Dilip Mehta won the Special Recognition Award for Cooking with Stella. Sutapa Ghosh, founder of Houston’s own Indian Film Festival, told us the idea for the first festival was inspired by the success of Slumdog Millionaire. “Slumdog, coupled with how international our city has become, made it clear for me that it was the right time for Houston to get [a festival].” This year’s 2nd Annual Indian Film Festivalis a five-day long affair. One highlight is UDAAN, which was well received at the Cannes Film Festival; it tells the story of a teenager in rural India who longs to be a writer, against his father’s wishes. The director of this coming-of-age story, Vikramaditya Motwane, will attend the festival’s Awards Night on Sunday. Also in attendance will be Indian heartthrob Iqbal Khan and actress Raima Sen. Sen plays a young widow in The Japanese Wife, screening at the fest.
